Hyperink Jobs

Mission

Our mission is to cause a long-needed paradigm shift across traditional publishing; to create technology which fundamentally changes how the world shares and distributes knowledge.

We’re publishing more books, faster, by abandoning outdated, unscalable, manual practices and replacing them with technology driven processes. Aside from streamlining the publishing process, we achieve high quality content at scale by leveraging principles of ai/machine learning, trend analysis, and statistics to understand and learn what our readers want.

Hyperink's office is in SoMa in San Francisco, convenient for transit and with lots of great food nearby.

We're funded by Y Combinator and some of the Valley's top VCs and angel investors, including those with deep publishing experience.

Full Stack Hacker

You

You were not put here on this earth to warm benches -- you are a computer scientist who is passionate about your trade and expects to be involved as a core team member of a quickly growing startup (and all the stresses and challenges that come along with it). You will be designing, leading, and responsible for your own products and working with a team of smart, hardworking engineers.

Team

The Hyperink engineering team is a tightly knit group of 5 hacking enthusiasts from various backgrounds including machine learning, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, computational economics, web architecture, systems performance, and databases. Our team consists of many 2nd time entrepreneurs, some bringing experience from marketing/engineering giants like Microsoft and Google.

Culture

Our culture involves long hours, and a team-first, ‘get stuff done’ attitude. We often get excited about such things as hackathons, beautiful code, and lambda calculus. We tend to work from the command line using vi, emacs, and screen. Our team is built upon trust and around culture. We pride ourselves with striving for transparency. We are able to keep our hierarchy flat because of our selective hiring process: we expect every teammate to become core members of our engineering team.

Stack

We’re looking for full stack engineers who aren’t afraid to hack in any language and are willing to learn and adapt to best practices / multi-paradigms. While Python has emerged as our predominant language, we also heavily use javascript (node.js), Clojure, and as little php as we can get away with.

Challenges

  • Streamlining Publishing: Every day we innovate new techniques, APIs, and web services, to make the publishing process as hands free and as frictionless as possible for our writers.
  • Big Data + Machine Learning: We use AI, machine learning, and NLP to automate article summarising, uncover leading topic trends, assist in content quality control, and semantically analyze documents. Driving our systems and processes are thousands of book-loads of valuable data.

E-mail us at jobs@hyperink.com if you're interested. We move fast, and we'll respond to you in less than 48 hours.

Front-End / UI Engineer

You

You will own projects from beginning to end. You will have the freedom to dream, design and develop at a fast pace. You will be a core team member of a quickly growing startup (and all the stresses and challenges that come along with it).

Culture

We are a quirky crew and passionate engineers who are excited about things like Twitter Bootstrap 2.0, rich web apps that people think are desktop apps, and a beautiful, clean user experience. We tend to prototype rapidly and we aren’t afraid to experiment. We have no company hierarchy, we are flat and we pride ourselves with striving for transparency. And we love content.

Stack

On the frontend we mostly use HTML5, CSS3 and Javascript. In addition, on the backend we write in mostly Python with the occasional Ruby. We have experimented with node.js and we like it. Bonus points for having a broad range of skills including design, an appreciation for testing and a passion for performance.

Challenges

  • Make publishing easy: We want to make the content creation process and reading experience EASY for techies and non-techies. How do we distill a process as complex as publishing a book into an intuitive, clean web app?  How do we provide a lot of data and layers of functionality in fast, interactive interface?
  • Redefining the book: Changing people’s preconceived notions of a book. Creating the interface and design of tomorrow’s book. Innovating on a fundamental human activity, reading.
  • Creating a more connected world: We want to readers to have fun, effective ways to discover new authors and topics. Authors should be able to openly converse and interact with their fans. We want to make books social and personalized.
