- Anyone under the age of 18
- Pregnant or nursing women
- Anyone diagnosed with these conditions: diabetes, low blood sugar, eating disorders, kidney disease, liver disease, malnutrition, addictions, underweight, anemia, impaired immune function, infection, nutritional deficiency, low blood pressure, ulcerative colitis, cancer, terminal illness, epilepsy, or other chronic conditions unless medically approved and supervised
- Anyone who is about to have surgery or has recently had surgery
- People currently taking prescription drugs without a doctor’s approval. Dr. Wong cites that grapefruit fasts can alter the effectiveness of medication
Dr. Wong also cites the following as potential side effects of a juice fast:
- Headaches, fatigue, low blood sugar, constipation, acne, body odor, bad breath and diarrhea
- More series side effects are: fainting, dizziness, low blood pressure, heart arrhythmia’s, weight loss, hunger, vomiting, diarrhea, and kidney problems. Dr. Wong recommends that should these symptoms manifest that a person seek immediate medical attention
- Protein and calcium deficiency in extended fasts
