I can only offer an answer that addresses the formation of Andreessen-Horowitz and after, as that's what I'm more familiar with, though obviously each part of his career could have its own standalone explanation.

As a venture capitalist, it's pretty remarkable what Andreessen and his partners have been able to do in less than two years, keeping in mind that he and Horowitz formed the firm on July 6, 2009.

Think about that  in less than two years, their firm has been able to:

In less than two years he has helped drive a brand new venture capital firm right to the top-tier without any institutional history. That is amazing. Not only are they considered by all the other top tier firms to be this way, many regard them as the preeminent firm right now, mid-2011. In my opinion, there are two contributing factors to this rapid ascension:

  1. The firm structure of Andreessen-Horowitz is very different than traditional VC partnership. Right now, there are four general partners and over 20 specialist partners that work on a variety of things ranging from business development, operations, marketing, public relations, recruiting, and so forth. This is seen by some as a more efficient venture capital structure and puts the firm in a position to market (and hopefully deliver) real value-added services to potential portfolio companies.
  2. It is pretty clear (to me, as a bystander) that the firm's philosophy, at least in consumer web, is to not only win every deal involving a category winner, but to lead the deal and make it happen, from start to finish. They give off the vibe that they are decisive, in control, and set the tone and pace for the deal prior to and after investment. They are not price sensitive for what they perceive to be the best internet companies, and that, I believe, sets them apart.
