Things You Must Do For A Successful Consulting Fit Interview

by Jaineel Aga

This chapter is a free excerpt from The Best Book on Getting Consulting Jobs In India.

During your interview, there are several qualities your interviewer will be looking for. Here are somethings you must do to convert your consulting interview into a consulting job.

1. Be well dressed and groomed. Remember, this is consulting. This is a people’s business where they expect you to be presentable in front of a client. Take the effort to shave that morning and put on a sharp suit with polished shoes. The last thing you want to do is look like you just woke up and grabbed the first thing in your closet. That won't sit well with your interviewer.

2. Be polite to everyone from the doorman to the receptionist. Remember, you are being judged at every stage. Always have a polite attitude.

3. Start your day on a very positive note. Feel good about yourself. Trust me. I know this may sound like a motivation speech, but it really works. Wake up that day and tell yourself you’re going to do well. That mindset will take you through the day, which will be long and challenging work both physically and mentally.

4. Have a hearty breakfast. Don't starve yourself. You'll need a lot of energy, especially if you take back to back fit and case interviews-- the structure for most consulting firms. Some people starve themselves out of nervousness and find themselves completely drained by the middle of the day. You should be healthy and confident. Again, if you feel confident, you will be confident during the interview.

5. Thank the interviewer after the interview is done. Remember, Indian consulting is a profession of long hours; your interviewer has taken time out of his or her busy schedule to meet with you. It’s always nice to thank him or her for taking the time.

6. Have a question to end your fit interview. There are so many times when I have asked interviewees if they have any questions for me, and either the questions are so boring, they could have read off the internet, or they will say they don’t have any questions.

Because of your thorough research, you may not have any questions; however, that final question is your last chance to display the amount of research you’ve done on the company and demonstrate your intelligence.

Think of at least a couple of questions for the end of the interview.
