When I was preparing my application years ago, I remember having to scour a number of conflicting sources and wishing that someone would just be brutally honest about the job and how to break in. Other books on the subject are written from the viewpoint of career advisors who have never been on the inside. As someone who has applied to the analyst position from a non-traditional school, advised peers at the post-MBA level, and formally recruited both analysts and associates from various backgrounds, I have been on all sides of the fence. I know the struggles of being a student and desperately wanting to launch your career with a desirable and highly competitive position. I also know the tactics that investment bankers employ to make sure they are hiring the best and the brightest. About the Author(s)

Donna Khalife is an entrepreneur and a career coach in Los Angeles, California. She holds an MBA from Harvard Business School as well as Bachelor degrees in Finance and International Relations from Boston University. Donna began her career in New York in 2005 as an Analyst in J.P. Morgan's Mergers and Acquisitions Group and was later promoted to Associate despite the subprime mortgage crisis and the firm's downsizing. She served as a recruiter on behalf of the firm and has interviewed hundreds of potential analysts and associates from various schools over the years. During her time in investment banking, Donna completed numerous transactions across a multitude of industries including the multi-billion dollar sale of The Weather Channel and weather.com, the GM/Chrysler government bailout, and the $9.7 billion merger of Dex Media and R.H. Donnelley, among many others. Donna has been a career coach for nearly a decade and tremendously enjoys the privilege of mentoring individuals and helping them achieve their goals. And I'm not picky; I like all kinds, which is how you know you have a real addiction. I recently moved to the West Coast and a friend sent me a tray of cheeses as a housewarming gift... That sums it up! What's your strangest hobby? I have a few strange hobbies… philosophizing about the meaning of life, making figures out of play-doh, practicing improv, finding ways for businesses to collaborate with non-profits, asking people about their life stories, getting lost in cyberspace, just to name a few! What is the craziest thing that has ever happened to you (on or the off job)? When I was working on the sale of one of Goodyear's divisions, I had to do a number of factory visits on my own with potential buyers. I snuck out to the restroom after a long meeting and realized that I had been leading the entire session with black raccoon eyes, remnants of the safety goggles and rubber residue…! What is your favorite quote and why? I love many quotes, but one that I live by is: “There are those who make money, and those who make history.” It was engrained in me by my father who is an artist. I love how it pushes you to think beyond society's definitions of success. What did you want to be when you were growing up? I always wanted to be an actress. In sixth grade, I was elected President of my elementary school (after much campaigning during recess!). Kids from younger grades would stop me in the hallway and ask for my “autograph”, and I always used to say, “Hold on to this! It will be worth a lot of money someday when I became an actress…” I now live in Hollywood, so it's not over yet!
