ABOUT THE BOOK

Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, the New York-bred Lady Gaga took her stage name from the classic Queen tune “Radio GaGa.” Before she was famous, the icon worked as a go-go dancer and dive bar singer at night while crafting stage costumes during the day. Gaga inked a deal with Island Def Records in 2008, but the company quickly terminated the contract and its decision-makers are now probably kicking themselves repeatedly.

This quicklet is your guide to Gaga's worldwide hits to date and the stories behind them.

EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK

In addition to her supremely original style, Lady Gaga cemented herself as a music icon thanks to her elaborate videos, many of which included dark themes relating to sex, the overall relationship between men and women, and the female relationship with the world in general. The fact that men frequently die in Gaga videos is not a coincidence; perhaps she is commenting on how women are the victims of violence both in the media and in the real world, so why not turn the proverbial table? The fashion in her videos is also noteworthy; for example, the late fashion designer Alexander McQueen designed the wardrobe for the “Bad Romance” video.

“You and I” is from Born This Way, the video for which includes Gaga as a man and Gaga as a mermaid.

Born This Way is Gaga’s second full album and features an assortment of catchy tunes regarding subjects of unity, peace, loving and accepting yourself, feminism, tormented relationships and personal discovery. The song “You and I” is supposedly about former boyfriend Luc Carl, with whom Gaga had an on-again, off-again relationship.
