Kindle Keyboard ($139 with special offers/3G $139 with special offers/$189 without special offers)

by Philip Shropshire

This chapter is a free excerpt from How To Get The Most From Your Kindle Device.

The Kindle Keyboard has all the features of the other Kindles, other than touch of course. Its also seems to have a performance edge over the least expensive Kindle. The only different set of features that the Kindle Keyboard seems to have is the keyboard. There doesn't seem to be much of  a difference between the version with 3G than the version without. I believe the version with 3G might weigh slightly more 8.7 ounces vs. Kindle Wi-Fi only that only weights 8.5 ounces.

So, here are the basic specs:

  • Touch Controls and Virtual Keyboard. The Kindle keyboard has a 5 way controller for on screen navigation. Kindle Keyboard also features a physical keyboard. (See more on this in “Further reading.”
  • Ergonomic Design. Amazon claims that the Kindle Keyboard is easy to read and hold and was in fact designed for long form reading.

Critiques about the Kindle Keyboard.

Critiques about the Kindle Keyboard.

  • CNET, while praising the large library, PDF support and the display of image files, notes that there is no expansion slot for adding more memory and no protective case included. Just for the record, protective cases are offered only as accessories.
  • A number of Amazon reviewers who gave the product a bad review noted that there was a problem with screen freezes. Or as hgaphoto phrased it: "...Amazon appears to have a specific quality control with this latest version of the Kindle. ..it is unacceptable for a product that is primarily intended to replace paper books to have issues like freezing and/or rebooting. After all, I never had a "paper" book freeze or reboot on me so far..."

Again, it should be stressed that the Kindle Keyboard has overwhelmingly positive reviews from Amazon users.
