Exploding Offers and Walk-Ons

The Exploding Offer

Sometimes, students are faced with something I like to call an exploding offer. It’s when a coach offers you a spot for admission and gives you a limited amount of time to decide. If the athlete does not respond in time, the offer is withdrawn. Sometimes this can even take place on a visit. This is all well and good if you are sure that you wanted to go to this school, but what if you’re still on the fence?

The Exploding Offer

Sometimes, students are faced with something I like to call an exploding offer. It’s when a coach offers you a spot for admission and gives you a limited amount of time to decide. If the athlete does not respond in time, the offer is withdrawn. Sometimes this can even take place on a visit. This is all well and good if you are sure that you wanted to go to this school, but what if you’re still on the fence?

Don’t panic. There could be many different reasons why you’ve received an exploding offer. Coaches could have other prospects on the waitlist, or they just want to see how much you want to be part of this institution. In any case, don’t act hastily. Seriously consider before you make a decision. It is completely correct to contact other schools you are still waiting to hear from. Explain the situation to them, and they can let you know where they stand. From there, you can weigh your options more realistically before making your final decision.

Walk-Ons

Sometimes the recruiting process just doesn’t pan out the way you envisioned. That’s totally okay! The good news is that there is still a way you can play football in the Ivy League: gaining normal admission to one of these institutions and walking on.

This is certainly not an easy task, but something that is very possible. Typically walk-on’s contact the coaching staff after they know they’ve been admitted and want to play, but unfortunately didn’t receive one of the coveted 30 spots. From here they might ask for some film, but from what I’ve experienced most people who have experience and want to play are given a chance to come to football camp.

Just to give you a sense of how realistic this option is, my class had 2 guys walk on to the team. Both played all four years and one ended up being an All-Ivy Selection and captain. So if it turns out that the cards didn’t fall your way in the recruiting process, don’t give up hope. If you can find a way to gain admission, the opportunity is yours for the taking.
