Do Campus Visits Matter For Business School?

This chapter is a free excerpt from The Best Book on Top Ten MBA Admissions.

I visited Stanford and I visited Northwestern, mostly out of convenience. I didn't make those trips to visit the schools specifically. I think that it's helpful but not worth a whole trip unless you're already there.

For Stanford specifically they have a program called the design school, which is a separate building; it's a collaborative operation between multiple grad schools there. That's kind of unique to Stanford, so I thought it would be useful to go see and talk about in my essays.

Just seeing the campus doesn't matter much, because it won't differentiate you from the other candidates. So what if you've seen the campus and it's beautiful? I don't think you're worse off if you don't go and I don't think you're better off if you do go.

Visiting is a waste of time and money if you're doing it just to check the box on your application. If you have a special program like that, if you want to go to MIT and see the media lab, and if you're on the same side of the country, then maybe it's worth it. Otherwise, it probably won't help much.
