Athletics Information and Football Rivalries

by Scott Britton

This chapter is a free excerpt from The Best Book on Ivy League Football Recruiting.

As for the athletic department of a certain university, it may be wise to see how it’s doing in current season’s standings. It would also be good to read up on the coaching staff, so you can see if their style and their game play is a good fit for you. Here’s a chart that tracks the records of the Ivy League schools for the 2010 season:http://espn.go.com/college-football/conferences/standings/_/id/22/year/2010/ivy-conference

Although I’d personally like to see some sort of playoff or championship game, this format is cool because it makes every game so important. The difference between getting a coveted Ivy League Championship ring can be just a few points.

Here’s a look at the past champions over the past 10 seasons:

Ivy League History

Although there does seem to be perennial favorites, in the past 10 years 5 different teams have won an Ivy League Championship. I don’t think anyone will question whether the league has any parity, which was one of my favorite parts about playing in the league. Every year it was a dogfight for who would be crowned champion.

My freshman season, I was fortunate to be on an Ivy League Championship team. Although I was only a freshman and got injured during the middle of the season, I can truly say that winning that title was special.

Rivalries in the Ivy League

I thought it’d be cool to highlight some rivalries. Below are some of the more historical rivalries within the Ivy League. I’m not sure how strong these have stayed, but I do know that at Princeton we certainly felt like there were some other rivalries no mentioned.

We always scrimmaged Yale during the pre-season and I’d have to say they were who we felt were our rivals. I know that they have one with Harvard as well which is well-storied and covered. It's called “The Game.”

Rivalries

Regarding some of the more recent rivalries outside of Princeton its hard for me to have a pulse on these since I’ve been out of the league for a few years and these are subject to change. This would be a great question to ask some of the players or coaches on your recruiting visit!
