Let me start with a story. Before I joined Parthenon, I had done a lot of research on the consulting industry and what the job would be like, so when I got the job offer, I decided to go on a 45-day Eurotrip!

I didn't think I'd have another opportunity soon. Take a step back and cherish the free time that you have!

Once you end up in a corporate lifestyle, you get an average of 2.5-3 weeks of vacation every year. If there's time after graduation and before your Deloitte job starts, you should take advantage of it!

Having said that, let's talk about how to be a successful rockstar consultant:

#1 The Importance Of Discipline

First off, broadly speaking, the types of skills that make you successful as a consultant would make you successful in any corporate job.

For example, make sure you're very disciplined. As a student, you can be lazy and carefree, stay up late at night, and eat random food at random times, but as a consultant, it's extremely important to be efficient in your personal and professional life. This is to maintain your health, because once the work pressure gets to you, you start neglecting the aspects of life that can be detrimental to your health in the long run.

I sound a little like a teacher preaching, but this is a key part of the answer to "what it takes to be a good consultant." Frankly, those who are healthiest and fittest are the best consultants! They have the most energy because they take care of themselves.

So have good discipline in life.

#2 Be very presentable.

The picture of a consultant is someone who's well groomed, someone who's not wearing torn or stained clothes, and who makes sure the smaller things are presented well.

Invest in a good wardrobe upfront. 2 good suits and 2 pairs of good shoes will take you a long way. It's something you may want to invest in even before the campus interview process starts, because it helps for the consulting interview, and you can be 100% sure it'll help once you get the job offer.

There have been cases where people have lost out on job offers because they showed up for an interview unshaven, or with long hair, or wearing unprofessional attire.

At a Silicon Valley startup, you don't need to worry about these things. But if you want to work for BCG Mumbai or McKinsey Delhi, these things matter.

The consulting industry is old school - and you'll need to toe the line for essentials like grooming and attire.
